March 27-29 – SCCA – Mazda Raceway - Laguna Seca (MRLS)

This was my first SCCA race ever. The mechanics were similar (warmup, qual, race – each day) but there were definitely differences. They do more safety checks every weekend, and they are sticklers for having the appropriate wristband before going on track. And, they actually have professional announcers calling every race. I’m not sure who listens, but it’s kinda cool just the same.

The one main difference seemed to be the social on Saturday night. NASA is a big blowout. SCCA just seems… less so. Disappointing, by comparison. At NASA, everyone is welcome and racing is the topic. If you’re talking racing, you’re part of the conversation. At SCCA, it seemed like most folks knew each other and, if you didn’t know anyone, you were on the outside. I’m not bashful, but still it was hard to break in – even a little bit.

The biggest benefit was that Miatas don't ever run with the E30s. YAY!
